For an outing in a touring canoe or kayak you will be equipped with: a life jacket, paddle and a spray skirt for the kayak.
Whether you are accompanied or unaccompanied, on the Serre-Ponçon Lake or the middle section of the Durance between Tallard and Sisteron, the are a few rules that need to be respected.
Listen to advice from the professionals!
It is essential that you can handle deep water and can swim for 25 metres.
One fine Saturday in June, a team from the Comité Départemental du Tourisme tested out touring canoes on the middle section of the Durance, on a 14 km stretch between Monetier Allemond and Ventavon.
There were two of us in each canoe, equipped with life vests, paddles, waterproof pouch, sun hat and sun cream (essential), and ready to explore this stretch of the Durance River.
It was hard work at the beginning but we soon learned to coordinate ourselves and steer our boats.
We could then finally make the most of the river and the countryside.
The whole team was surprised to discover that there is a peaceful river where you can try out paddling sports and go for quiet walks with the family by the water’s edge in the Hautes-Alpes.
This is highly recommended for people who are hesitating about going on a raft and for those who are looking for a different way to travel and tour. This is a great way to explore the treasures of the Durance River and to go back in time and learn more about the history of the great Serre-Ponçon Lake.
