Ideal for family walks! It’s not always easy to go for walks with the kids… The solution? Why not walk with a packhorse (in this case a donkey) or llama? Donkeys and llamas make ideal companions, as they walk at a good pace for toddlers and can carry the children when they get tired. Parents can carry a lighter pack while the kids can happily look after their walking companion without noticing the time fly by.
Sample price for hiring a donkey in the Hautes-Alpes: from 30€ to 50€ per day without a guide
> It’s fun! Donkeys are travelling companions who love to play and have cuddles. Everyone wants to brush the donkey in the morning, so there is no problem with getting up in the morning. Older children will feel responsible for the donkey, while younger kids will think it’s a fairytale come true… A donkey also comes in handy for carrying your gear!
> Meeting people. A donkey is certainly a conversation point and most people will want to chat with you and stroke the donkey!
> Pace. Donkeys walk at a slow and steady 3 to 4 km/h. This is ideal for children and gives you the opportunity to take in the views and listen to the birds…
Absolutely not! But if you need reassurance, ask to go with a mountain leader the first time you take the donkey out.
What will the donkey need during the walk?
The donkey will eat grass throughout the day and its owner will provide you with a small amount of extra food for the duration of the walk (barley, for example). The donkey will drink at the various water sources you encounter on your walk. Each morning and evening the donkey must be groomed with a currycomb and brush and its hooves must be checked. Its owner will show you a few simple techniques to ensure that your donkey is comfortable throughout the walk.
